Media Sniffer ← Back to overview

Privacy policy

Last updated: 3 August 2026

Media Sniffer does not collect, transmit, or sell any data. There is no server, no analytics, and no account. Nothing you do in the extension is visible to us.

What the extension accesses

To find media on a page, the extension observes the URLs and response headers of network requests your browser makes while you browse. This happens entirely inside your browser.

It does not read page content, form input, passwords, or browsing history.

What is stored, and where

The list of media found on each open tab is held in session storage. It lives in memory only, is never written to disk, and is erased when the tab navigates away, when the tab closes, and when the browser restarts.

Two things are stored persistently on your own computer, and only there:

Neither is transmitted anywhere. No browsing history, media URL, or downloaded file is ever written to disk by the extension.

License checks are offline

Activating Premium contacts no server. A license key is a cryptographic signature that the extension verifies against a public key contained in the extension package itself. That means we cannot see when, where, or how often you activate — and the extension works with no network connection at all beyond the media you choose to download.

Network connections

The extension makes network requests only to URLs you explicitly choose to download, and only when you click Save. For encrypted streams it also fetches the decryption key named by the stream's own playlist, from that stream's own server. It contacts no other server — not ours, not any third party's.

Payments

Purchases are processed by Stripe. Your payment details are entered on Stripe's own checkout page and are never seen by, or transmitted through, this website or the extension. Stripe receives your email address and payment information in order to take the payment and send your receipt; their handling of it is governed by Stripe's privacy policy. We receive your email address and order reference so we can send you a license key and honour refunds.

Downloaded files

Files are saved to your normal Chrome download location. The extension does not read them back or track what you downloaded.

Permissions

PermissionWhy
webRequest + <all_urls> Observe response headers to detect media. Media can appear on any site, so the scope cannot be narrowed in advance. Read-only — the extension never blocks or modifies a request.
downloadsSave the file you selected.
storage Hold the per-tab list in session memory, and your license key and download preference locally.
tabsRead the current tab's title and address to suggest a filename.
offscreenHost long-running downloads that would otherwise be interrupted.
declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess Restore the page's original Referer on the extension's own stream requests, because some servers refuse requests without it. The rule applies only to the extension's own requests to that stream's host, lasts only for the duration of one download, and never touches any web page's traffic.

Children

Media Sniffer is not directed at children under 13 and collects no data from anyone, including children.

Changes
